Terreyl Fields, electronic/rap artist, released his second EP, ‘We Aren’t Over…’ in March of this year. Keeping true to his chill, intergalactic vibe, Fields shares a story of love, heartbreak, betrayal, and healing in the span of three tracks. Fields shared on social media that this EP is about and derived from his dating life during the early months of 2022. Listening to this EP is a journey worth taking.

The EP begins with ‘Tonight.’ This track starts with spacey synths that soon join up with lofi bass beats before the first verse promptly takes hold. The leading line is a metaphor for his career as a director, “This ain’t no movie I’m gonna act in / Rather not be your pilot season / it got me questioning my reasons / I ain't fakin’ no more.” Fields shares that once he found out the truth, it was so devastating that it made him question everything about the relationship he had been in and the partner he was with. He discovered the truth, and he’s done pretending to see past it. When the second chorus hits the bridge, the tempo picks up and the self-freeing line, “I’m gonna rock tonight” before sliding into the chorus again. This signifies that Fields is moving on, and he will do what it takes to get back to himself. After riding the upbeat tempo into the second bridge, the song ends on the familiar spacey synth wave it began on.

Staying true to the chill, intergalactic vibe of the first track, ‘Glistening’ starts slow and steady before ramping up into an empowering message to let go of what isn’t serving you anymore. During the pre-chorus, you will hear it begin with the lyrics, “I was mad when I had had your baggage,” and ends with “I’m left with no fucks to give cause.” At a certain point, you realize that you can only give someone so many chances before you have to say enough is enough. The chorus changes tone into a string of optimism. Fields shares that he’s living life like he should, making music he’s proud of, and is well on his way to thriving post-breakup. ‘Glistening’ is a nice reminder that once you clean off the dust of what’s toxic, you’ll be glistening. You’ll feel better inside and out, and you’ll feel more like yourself.

The EP ends on the empowering track ‘Filmmakers’ featuring indapond. The message of healing and finding oneself flows over from ‘Glistening.’ This final track is a narrative of being done with partners who lie, play games, or deceive you and coming back to yourself. Fields acknowledges he’s ready for a relationship that lasts, and he and indapond take to the mic to share that self-love isn’t selfish. There is no shame in taking the time to heal and find your confidence again. And once it’s back and better than ever, don’t let anyone take it from you. In my opinion, this is the perfect way to bring the post-breakup narrative that is ‘We Aren’t Over…’ to an end.

‘We Aren’t Over…’ is an EP about coming to terms with the truth, no matter how much it hurts or pisses you off, making an effort to heal from it, and rediscovering and empowering yourself. I highly recommend this trio of songs to anyone who needs a gentle nudge to begin healing, or to anyone who enjoys chill, rap that tells a story. Terreyl Fields proves himself a great talent in this self-produced EP. You can listen to the full EP here.
