In Case You Missed It: Sons of Texas Calls it Quits After 8 Years

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

Sons of Texas, formed in 2013, has officially called it quits as of December 2021. The metal band had an eight-year run that included the release of two studio albums, one EP, and countless live shows. When the band was playing a show they matched each other’s energies and were truly engulfed in the response from their crowd. So what happened?

While the members of what used to be Sons of Texas haven’t explicitly stated what caused the break-up, they did make it clear that things just weren’t working anymore. This could mean a multitude of things. Maybe the artists were having creative differences, the ongoing pandemic influencing the already ever-changing music scene, or it could have been due to other personal reasons. Regardless, the members who posted statements on social media (Nick Villarreal; Bass, Mike Villarreal; drums, and Jon Olivarez; guitar) stated that they each were ready to welcome the next chapter of their lives with open arms.

There were a set of four statements released by the former band members. One of which was posted on the Sons of Texas Instagram account by Jes DeHoyos (guitar). He begins by saying, “...all good things must come to an end.” He and the other ex-members all make it clear that while they have departed, there were great times and wonderful memories made during their time in Sons of Texas.

The Villarreal brothers’ statements both mentioned how they were sad to see their time in Sons of Texas come to an end. Mike ends his statement by writing, “See y’all down the road sometime!” And Nick urges fans and friends, “...keep in touch as I delve into the next chapter!” They make it clear that fans haven’t seen the last of them, but they don’t outright say the next chapter entails music or live performance.

Rhythm guitarist Jon Olivarez shared that he is “looking to start a new project.” He even goes as far as to ask his followers for any “sick bassist and drummer” recommendations. Olivarez was the only one to explicitly mention starting up a new music project, but I am curious to see if these guys will start a project of their own.

The only member of the band who has not released a personal statement is the frontman, Mark Morales. The last he posted on Instagram was in October (2021) promoting his cover of John Lennon’s ‘Mother.’

Eight years is a long time for a group to be creating music together. A lot of personal growth and changes can occur within that time frame that can result in a separation being necessary. I began listening to Sons of Texas early last year, and I had the privilege of seeing them live in Austin, TX. While I am sad to see them part ways, I am excited to see what the members have planned for the future; music-related or not.
